the eyerolling jesus

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man. ~Heraclitus

I’m sitting in a window seat perched over and above a bubbling mountain brook, reading the Gospel of Luke.  Last summer I sat here in this same place reading Mark, overwhelmed with the closing of that gospel and Jesus’ meeting with Mary Magdalene at the tomb and wrote this post about it.  A year later and I am laughing because I just bumped into the very human Jesus.  Not only the divine healer but the eyerolling, frustrated, willyoupeopleeverlearn Jesus.  And I especially love him.

Teacher, I beg you, look at my son; he is my only child.  For a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams and it convulses him until he foams at the mouth;  it releases him only with difficulty, wearing him out.  I begged your disciples to cast it out but they could not.  Jesus said in reply, ‘O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and endure you?  [he sighs, rolls his eyes]  Bring your son here.’ Luke 9: 38-41
